Organ donation of Jash Oja: Little boy inspires millions!!

Dr. Smriti Sharma
Assistant Professor, Miranda House, University of Delhi

The example of extreme humanism was set by a family in Surat when they decided to donate the organs of their 2.5 year old year son after doctors declared him brain dead. He became the youngest cadaver donor and gave a new lease of life to seven children, including two from Russia and Ukraine.

On the fateful day of December 9, 2020 in Surat, two and a half year old, Jash Oza fell from the second floor balcony of his neighbour’s house and was rushed to the hospital. He suffered brain haemorrhage and swelling. Unfortunately, doctors declared him brain dead on December 14, 2020. The family was devastated. They were contacted by an NGO working in the field of organ donation regarding the donation of organs after brain death. The parents, Mrs. Archana Oza and Mr. Sanjeev Oza showed exemplary courage in the face of this adversity and decided to go for this noble cause.

Due to the timely decision by the parents and efforts by doctors, Jash’s heart, liver, lungs, both kidneys and eyes were donated and gave a new lease of life to seven children. Jash's heart and lungs were brought from Surat through the Green Corridor to MGM Hospital in Chennai. A distance of 1,615 km between Chennai and Surat was covered in 160 minutes by air. The heart was transplanted to a four-year-old Russian boy and the lungs to another four-year-old boy from Ukraine at MGM hospital in Chennai. The kidneys were transplanted to a 13-year-old girl from Surendranagar and a 17-year-old girl from Surat through Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad. The liver was transplanted to a two-year-old boy at IKDRC. The corneas were donated to Lok Drasti Chakshu Bank in Surat. This is the second organ donation amid the Covid-19 pandemic in Surat city.

Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti salutes the little donor and his parents for their exemplary courage and sacrifice.
