Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Donation

What is Bone Marrow and Stem Cells
Bone marrow is soft tissue found in some bones of our body. Bone marrow creates stem cells.
Stem cells are the mother cells that divide to form the following in our body:

Red blood cells which carry oxygen from lungs to all tissues of the body. When low (anaemia), the patient looks tired and pale;

White blood cells are crucial part of immune system which protect the body from infection, bacteria and virus. When low, patient is more at risk of infection; and

Platelets which form blood clots and help control bleeding. When low, the patient can bruise easily and it takes longer to stop bleeding.

What is Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant
It is a medical treatment procedure in which matched stem cells of a donor are infused into patient to treat many Blood related.diseases which cannot be treated by any medication or surgery.

Bone Marrow and Stem Cell donation saves lives By donating, you save a precious life suffering from blood cancer, leukaemia, thalassemia and many other diseases.

Who can donate
Any person between 18 to 50 years in good health can donate.

Procedure for donation
A willing donor is to register himself in the Asian Indian Donor Marrow Registry (AIDMR) at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The donor fills up a form and undergoes an initial testing by drawing 10ml of blood. The test is called HLA. The registration is complete. Unlike blood donation, in the case of unrelated donor, the chances are one in millions that a donors HLA will match with a needy patient. Therefore, the requirement of having millions of registered donors.

If you are the lucky donor in that your HLA matches with a patient, the Registry shall request you to come for donation. You may be required to take a tablet for 4-5 days to mobilise stem cells in your blood. Thereafter, your blood shall be taken from a needle in one arm, pass through a machine which separates and collects stem cells and the remaining blood is returned to you.

Your body replenishes the donated cells in about 4-5 weeks. The donor suffers no pain in the process except a needle prick in the arm. The donor is not to bear any expense. All expenses are made by AIDMR. With this, you have saved a life and cured a critical patient. Remember, there is no substitute for stem cells except by donations.

Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Registry

A People’s Initiative by Dadhichi Deh Dan Samiti

Every year, thousands of people with blood disorders such as leukemia, thalassemia, anemia reach a stage where only a stem cell transplant can save them.  Family members, particularly real brothers and sisters, have only a 1 in 4 chance of making the best match but this is not always possible. To locate an unrelated volunteer donor, the odds range from 1 in millions depending on their HLA gene type.

The primary source of stem cells is from bone marrow or the peripheral blood. This remains the crucial life-line for such patients.  It is important to register potential stem-cell donors after performing the necessary blood test. Presently, the registry has about 3000 donors. However, we need millions of registered donors in AIDMR. This requires a public initiative.

There is a need for public awareness and participation to bridge the gap. Dadhichi Deh Dan Samiti has taken up this cause for a Diseases Free and Healthy India.

COME AND JOIN.  DONATE BONE MARROW AND STEM CELLS IN THE CAUSE OF HUMANITY.  IT SAVES LIVES.

You can make your contribution by:

  1. By registering as a donor
  2. Enrol as a volunteer to popularise the cause
  3. Making generous donation.
